A Strong(er) 2012

A Strong(er) 2012

2012-01-02 By Jerred Moon

Goals are set for 2012, and I am ready to go! My ultimate goal is to complete Paul Smith’s Kong, but within that goal there are a lot of “micro-goals”. First, I have to get stronger!! With a dramatic drop in strength last year due to surgery, I decided it is time to get stronger than I ever have been before.

How I find motivation through a T-Shirt

I grabbed a Strong(er) t-shirt from EliteFTS.com when it was on sale a few weeks ago for $10.95. This $10.95 investment, this 50/50 cotton poleyester blend, this large black T-Shirt will be the entire core to my training in 2012. I find the Strong(er) concept by Dave Tate intriguing (more below). I bought this T-Shirt with a specific idea in mind…I AM NOT ALLOWED TO WEAR IT!! I cannot wear the t-shirt till I meet some of my micro-goals on the quest to my ultimate goal.

  • Complete the original King Kong workout in under 5:00
This micro-goal will make sure I am on the proper strength and conditioning path. The Strong(er) T-Shirt will be with me on every workout. I will have it in my garage on my wall staring me in the face everyday. If I travel, I will take it with me and use it as a sweat towel…I think you get the idea. I am not allowed to wear the shirt till I actually accomplish something. That will make this shirt mean more to me than any T-Shirt should, but every time I put it on (once I am allowed) I will feel like I have accomplished something.

Getting Strong(er)

The Strong(er) concept comes from the guys over at EliteFTS, specifically, it comes from Dave Tate. I say it is a concept becasue it is not simply being stronger than you were before. Here are some quotes from Dave Tate’s 3 phase program Strong(er):

  • A Strong(er) Athlete is an exceptional athlete, yet, of a different kind than the typical competitive sports participant. Unlike the person that trains rigorously to excel in one or two events, the goals of Strong(er) Athletes are to achieve overall strength and health to the best of their ability.
  • The Strong(er) Athlete will sacrifice a studied depth in training to achieve an optimum and well-rounded breadth.
  • In the end, you will be one of the few who possess EXTRAORDINARY RESOLVE.

While the Strong(er) program is great, I am more addicted to the concept than the program itself. I will be using Wendler 5/3/1 Program One Man One Barbell for strength gains, and CrossFit for my conditioning.

Here is to a Strong(er) 2012!!

I am really looking forward to a T-Shirt kicking my ass in 2012! I am ready for some serious training, I am ready to push myself in multiple domains of fitness, I am ready to get Strong(er) in 2012!!
