Joe Courtney
Sup, Joe? Hey, man,
Jerred Moon
rockin the eo three coaching shirt, one of my faves. Boom, it’s perfect. I think I need to get a new one man, I only have the original original the first ever produced. It’s getting pretty beat up.
Joe Courtney
Gotta be in uniform. Maybe we need to change it up. I don’t know.
Jerred Moon
You let me know. All right, we got a question from David. This is about one of our more recent episodes. So this was a little backstory, the someone asked about vomiting when they would get to a certain percentage of heart rate. And so Joe and I took our best stab at at helping this individual and what we thought it could be. But I told the story in that about how I had my my brother in law’s two of them were over for Christmas and basically puked and pooped themselves. After Max airdyne test and so David asks, aside from the time you got back at your in laws and made them throw up from the airdyne workout, how many other times have you knowingly inflicted prescribed torture on your loved ones? So I’m going to talk about the progressions of all this. I want to hear Joe’s stories first. And then I’ll kind of talk about what what things look like in my life
Joe Courtney
these days. I can’t remember how specific or specific I got from when we talked about the the nausea episode of vomiting at high intensities. I know I think I mentioned my brother he has it because of a acid reflux or something. Sometimes he had done it. Well, one time I made him do it. And it wasn’t even intentional. It was actually I gave him a easier workout. What I thought, but it happened. So I was it was in San Diego, you they came out to visit he actually wanted to do like one workout while they’re there at least. And then we did some hikes, but it was a running day for me. So I went and ran for 4045 minutes, whatever was around my neighborhood. And when I left as I was leaving, I told him Okay, and what you’re gonna do is you’re gonna get on the air die. And we’re just going to do with what is known for us is our gain intervals. And I just told him, Hey, you gonna do Hey, 20 seconds on as hard as you can and you get to rest for two and a half minutes. Like, okay, now not a problem. Just Just go hard. And that’s it. All right, cool. So did my run, I come back and he’s on the grass on the ground outside, like in our turf area, like completely fetal. completely done. And he was just could barely talk. He just said he only made it to four. Because he vomited after four and the neighbor next door. We never say
Jerred Moon
what is that? 80 seconds of work?
Joe Courtney
Yeah. And then the neighbor next door who we the entire time we live there. We never even talked to her never seen her. But she heard him vomiting and was yelling over the fence asking if he was okay, if she did call anybody because of that. Awesome. So yep, I did that to him once. And there’s also a few times.
Jerred Moon
Yeah, just a interjection there. When I first started doing gain intervals, back in the day, like when not back in the day day, like we’re around when we started garage, gym athlete, so you know, 2015 2016 timeframe, I started testing those, and we have one that’s called game to failure. And this is where you’re 10 seconds on, and then you rest, you know, whatever, two, two and a half minutes, like Joe said, and then you hit another 10. Second, I went hard. And it took me a long time to fail. But I almost puked on that one. It wasn’t after 80 seconds of work. I don’t know where it was at. But it was quite a few intervals. But then it’ll get to you those. So I’m trying to give your brothers and a pass like those gain intervals are not easy.
Joe Courtney
If you’ve never been on the airdyne, the assault bike, you feel assaulted by the first time you go hard, like you might be good for five seconds. And then it’s like, what the heck am I doing? What do I get myself into?
Jerred Moon
Yeah, it’s a it’s a brutal machine.
Joe Courtney
But there’s been times where I’ll make up workouts for especially when you’re in San Diego, I would make some up whenever because we want to get out on trails, I go outside, do some run stuff like that. So I would make up the running workouts because Liz just wants to be told what to do. So I made up one of ours and we went to a it was almost It was almost kind of like harder to kill $5 but a little bit different in our trail. And on this trail there was just like one giant Hill, and I made Listen, I do it. But she was not a fan. She didn’t either missed it. But it was just one of those where there’s definitely been times where I make those things up and just like wow, I did not think this fully through But okay,
Jerred Moon
trying to think I’ve never I’ve definitely programmed some workouts for Emily, but I never I’ve never had her cross the line, which is good for our marriage. But I would say this used to happen all the time. And this question actually just made me realize that it doesn’t anymore that people would visit. I’m kind Have a fitness guy. So they want to work out in the garage gym. And that would happen every Thanksgiving, Christmas, whatever holiday when we have people over, there’d be you know, a workout. But something always went wrong in these workouts like some I mean, early on, I’d say like 10 years ago, I was just not being a good coach. when things went wrong, I remember one time, Emily sister came to stay with us for a while, and she wanted to work out. But this is it wasn’t like a holiday time. So I wasn’t off work. You know, it was like, I was coming home and I was trying to get my workout in in the evening, and she wanted to join. So I didn’t really have time to coach and have time to like, whatever. So I programmed her workout. And I was like, it was like something easy, like, okay, you’re gonna do some kettlebell swings and a run because I feel like most people can do kettlebell swings. But I only had basically a heavy kettlebell. And I remember I was about to go for a run. And I look back, I’m like setting up my watch, I look back, and she’s in the grass in our front yard doing kettlebell swings. And this thing’s just like, she would try to swing it. And then it would like she takes like five steps forward, because like, she started doing it, and the momentum carries her forward. And then she tried to like pull it back and then take like, two steps back. And this kettlebell was just like dancing her all over the yard. And I was like, at that moment, I was like, you can either go for your run, or you can help.
I went for the run.
Jerred Moon
Yeah, so that was my worst, worst coaching moment there. Other than that, I’ve someone’s like, my father in law, I’ve, you know, he’s come and done box gym kettlebell workouts before. And there’s just always like a little tweak here or there, no matter how much we warm up, or how you know, it’s just if you take a untrained, fairly untrained individual, something bad can happen. And so these days, and if someone wants to come over and do something, because it’s always them pushing me not the other way around, I can No, no, come on, give me something good. Like, I want a good workout. I’m like, yeah, now now you come over and I’m like, we can go on a walk. You want to go on a walk with me? How about a run, maybe a light jog? You know, nothing, or intervals on air diner are fairly safe to program like, you’re not going to get hurt doing it. That’s a good one. But I don’t really do it for people. But now that I think about people don’t really like ask. So I think I kind of burned a lot of bridges with naked people like vomit and whatnot.
Joe Courtney
I’d be interested to see how people would do with the because whenever I’ve come over we use makeup randomly or workout and the last one we did was pretty decent. But I’d be interested to see how other people would handle it because I don’t think it would be fun for other people
Jerred Moon
like the sandbag running one we did Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I don’t I see with you. Yeah, I’ll
Joe Courtney
do it every experience.
Jerred Moon
Yes. Up and down my driveway. Yeah, that was a good one. I’ll see maybe after 2020 is over people will start coming over to my house again and I can start programming workouts actually it’s gonna be over soon with Scott so
Joe Courtney
